AWWI is excited to welcome Garry George as Chair and Keith Harrison as Vice Chair for our 2020 Board of Directors.
Garry George is Clean Energy Director at the National Audubon Society, a founding Partner of AWWI. Garry has served on the AWWI Board since 2015, serving as Secretary from 2017-2018 and as Vice Chair in 2019. Garry has taken a proactive leadership role on wind energy and wildlife, specializing in the intersection of renewable energy, climate, and birds at Audubon.
“The findings of Audubon’s 2019 report, Survival by Degrees: 389 Bird Species on the Brink, underscore the urgency with which climate change must be addressed to avoid catastrophic impacts to birds, as well as other wildlife,” said George. “Transitioning to clean energy is an essential component of mitigating climate change, and AWWI plays a pivotal role in enabling wind energy to expand while using the best available science, research, and technology to avoid, minimize, and mitigate impacts to birds and other wildlife. I am excited to serve in this leadership role in working with AWWI, the dedicated Board of NGOs and industry, and many committed stakeholders to advance these efforts.”
Keith Harrison is General Manager of Environmental Affairs at Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy provider and subsidiary of Southern Company, which joined AWWI as a Partner in 2017. Keith was elected to the Board in 2019 and has been active in supporting research and collaborative activities.
“AWWI brings great value to Southern Power and other wind industry collaborators,” said Keith. “I look forward to deepening the partnership between industry and conservation/science organizations and identifying and strengthening paths forward to achieving renewable energy and wildlife conservation goals.”
John Rogers, Union of Concerned Scientists, will continue as Treasurer.
“As we enter a new decade with critical challenges ahead, it is more important than ever to understand and address wind-wildlife challenges,” said Abby Arnold, AWWI Executive Director. “AWWI’s work is only possible through the dedication of our partners and Board of Directors to collaborate on tough issues. With the guidance of our Board, we are poised to solve these challenges.”
